I was impressed enough with the piston installation, but when he got to the exhaust manifold, wow.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2011-11-22

I just realized he did the cam shaft without any computer aided machining tools.

Did i miss something or does this engine not have spark plugs? I understand a bit on how internal combustion engines work and don't they need spark plugs?

also, what fuel is this running on?

Binro the Heretic - 2011-11-22

I think it's running on compressed air?

Wonko the Sane - 2011-11-22

Not sure what fuel this thing is using, but diesel engines don't use spark plugs. The fuel spontaneously ignites from compression, which is why the first cars had a crank on the front.

SolRo - 2011-11-22

air

it would need an electrical line to heat up the glow plugs of an oil burner.

plus the hose going in is clear of anything.

Binro the Heretic - 2011-11-22

I can't wait to see the itty-bitty transmission.

750 Hyracotherium under the hood.

I hope this becomes the engine for a tiny Batmobile driven by a kitten.

bopeton - 2011-11-22

No gaskets or o-rings, let alone lubricant. It's gotta be air or something. (There's some hint of oil on the rods in one of the shots, but inconclusive, and it didn't show him making an oil pan or lubricating individual parts.)

Still, humans really amaze me sometimes.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2011-11-22

But air would work on the same principle, or close to it. You can get the metal parts the right size, but making spark plugs that size would be very difficult to machine. Plus, having an engine like that run indoors on ordinary gasoline would require o-rings, a radiator, and a lot of complexity that would probably be very dangerous for something that size.

Still, this is an amazing piece of work.

CrimsonHyperSloth - 2011-11-22

You can see him oil it, I can't find the time mark immediately. It's a little round disc with a tube coming out of it.

I like to think he just knocked this out on a weekend to send to some rival, and they build increasingly smaller engines as some sort of feud.

Sanest Man Alive - 2011-11-22

I love this. Shit is some beautiful, enormously impressive work, but what's with the "elder gods" tag? That's strictly Euclidean geometry going on there.

Sanest Man Alive - 2011-11-22

Funrelated fact: I STILL catch myself reading the title as "Fully functional miniature V12 vagina." There is no such thing as adulthood.
