The Mothership - 2011-10-16
I'm a history professor, not an economist; but damn, I would kill to have this guy's lecture presence. What a badass class that must be to be in.

simon666 - 2011-10-17 Sounds like it's time to brush up on Cicero's 'Ideal Orator' and Aristotle's 'Rhetoric.'
|
The Mothership - 2011-10-17 funny you should say that, since I teach Cicero.

Zuckerberg once remarked that "The Social Network" had to invent a revenge scheme for his motivation because the idea that some people just wanna make stuff isn't very Hollywood.
I program and play music, so these examples ain't shocking. "Developers, given free time, will fix bugs? Musicians play for very little money? No way!" I guess that for the Readers' Digest set, it seems novel. But I'm equally baffled at what motivates those folks.
Also, companies manufacturing "purpose" for their employees is pointless. Someone who couldn't come up with a more lively plan than studying business was an 80%-er to begin with. You can give them purpose, but they'll still find a way to give the smallest shit possible. It's not an impediment to progress, hell, it's capitalism.
Side note: playing music won't get you laid? I knew economists were removed from reality, but that's like weapons-grade naivety. Kernel hacking, on the other hand...

pastorofmuppets - 2011-10-16 Nice. I play piano and pedal steel guitar, and right now I'm excited to be working with these guys:

(tinyurl'd so the bandmates don't see what a dick I am on the internet)
The record's not nearly done... what's up there are a few last-minute mixes we did so that we'd have something to hand out on tour, but it'll give you an idea. The band's based out of Philly and there's more in the works, so if you like it and are in the area, keep in touch (my name is John).

CrimsonHyperSloth - 2011-10-17 I like the music. Anyway to follow you for when an album is released?

My manager has the good sense to just leave me alone. He tries to insulate all his people from the ridiculous MPOTW (Management Paradigm of the Week) that the VP's learn at whatever retreats and just lets us work on what we think is important.
It's tremendously empowering and all he really has to do is come to the meetings we keep inviting him to so he knows what's getting fixed.
Occasionally the higher-ups will ask for something specific and then he'll nudge us in that direction but mostly he just lets us fix what the customers are having the most pain with and not only does it make us feel good to help the customers, the customers like working with us and will actually put up with a lot of stuff because they know we care and will fix it for them after we fix the bigger issues.
There are like 3 or 4 guys there that don't even have to work anymore. We have enough to retire but we actually enjoy working there, so we stay.

Very similar to the model of Academia before it became business oriented. Still you can universities that respect this kind of model.
Also, finding purpose in one's work is a socialist conspiracy.
